President Katerina Sakellaropoulou expressed Greece’s determination to further strengthen its relations with Latvia, during the official dinner held on Wednesday evening for Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs, who is on an official visit to Greece.
As Sakellaropoulou said, “Our countries walk side by side and act together in the establishment of peace and stability in the European continent, the European Union, NATO, and other international organizations.” She also noted that this year was the 20th anniversary since Latvia’s formal accession to the European Union, and it is a happy occasion that the accession treaty was signed in Athens during the Greek presidency.”
The president of Latvia, on his part, also referred to global challenges in Europe with the war on Ukraine and in the Middle East, and advocated for the European perspective of both Ukraine and Moldova. Greece and Latvia protect the external borders of the European Union and the challenges they face are similar, he noted, understanding and learning from each other.
He also expressed Latvia’s concern about the climate crisis and its effects, calling for immediate action and highlighting the critical nature of the problem for coastal countries due to rising sea levels.
