The arrest in Albania of an ethnic Greek candidate mayor constitutes a scandal if evidence is not fully substantiated, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias underlined on Friday.
As he arrived at the informal Gymnich meeting in Stockholm, Dendias referred to Dionysis-Fredi Beleri, who was arrested along with another ethnic Greek: “If there is no indisputable evidence, the arrest of a candidate mayor two days ahead of elections constitutes a scandal.”
Beleri is a candidate mayor in the municipality of Himare, Albania, running with KEAD party.
FM Dendias said that Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama had acknowledged the issue. He added that he had already briefed the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell and Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström, as chairs of the Gymnich meeting. “The Greek government will closely monitor the issue,” Dendias said.
