President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, attended this morning the memorial for those who lost their lives during the coup and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, and then laid a wreath at the Monument to the Unknown Soldier.
In her statement, Sakellaropoulou emphasized that “Fifty years have passed today since the barbaric invasion of the Turkish troops in Cyprus, a period of time during which the occupation of more than a third of its territory continues, in violation of any concept of international legality.
We do not forget the heroes, Cypriots and Greeks, who resisted the invader with unparalleled bravery and sacrificed their lives fighting the enemy, while we continue to stand by the families of the missing, until the fate of all of them is cleared out.
The final vindication of the sacred Cypriot struggle, by finding a just and sustainable solution based on the United Nations Decisions and the European acquis, is our top pursuit and our debt to history.”
