Greece is prepared to support the new government of Lebanon through the transfer of technical know-how on planning and implementing reforms that will change the country’s future, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Friday, following a multilateral meeting in Paris with French President Emmanuel Macron, Cyprus Republic President Nikos Christodoulides, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, and Syrian Interim President Ahmed Al Sharaa, who attended via teleconference.
Such help would also boost Lebanon’s Armed Forces’ ability to exercise national sovereignty, especially in the sensitive region of south Lebanon, Mitsotakis added.
According to government sources, the leaders discussed the issue of unfolding developments in the East Mediterranean and the Middle East with an emphasis on issues of security, migration, interconnectivity, and energy.
Sources said that Mitsotakis placed particular emphasis on security challenges the region faces, as well as on the joint challenge of the refugee and migration issues, particularly for Lebanon, which is under greater pressure in the borders with Syria, and for Cyprus as well.
In terms of Syria, the Greek prime minister reiterated Greece’s long-term stance for an inclusive political process of Syrian ownership that will protect all national and religious minorities. Mitsotakis also expressed his abhorrence for the recent violence recently northwestern Syria against Christian populations, while he also called for full accountability. Additionally, he reiterated Greece’s support of an inclusive Syria that respects all minorities and International Law.
In conclusion, Mitsotakis noted that energy projects of joint interest will benefit stability in the greater region, government sources said.
