Three women and a young girl are among the victims of a tragedy early Sunday when a boat carrying migrants capsized and sank northwest of Samos, near Agios Isidoros Bay.
At the time of the incident, severe weather conditions prevailed, with winds reaching 6 Beaufort. A search and rescue operation, coordinated by the coast guard’s joint rescue coordination center is ongoing involving a patrol vessel and nearby ships.
The crew of a coast guard open-sea support vessel initially rescued five individuals in the area. Additionally, members of the Karlovasi coast guard, assisted by the police, located 26 more migrants on land near Agios Isidoros. Among them was a pregnant woman, who was transported to Karlovasi health center for medical assistance.
During the investigation, a 21-year-old foreign national was identified by survivors as the boat’s operator and was arrested.
