GALVESTON, Texas (April 13, 2023) Elissa, a three-masted barque and one of three ships of her kind still active, transits the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Galveston Beach during Tall Ships Challenge Galveston 2023. Galveston Historical Foundation brought Elissa, an 1877 square-rigged iron barque, from a scrap yard in Piraeus Harbor, Greece to Galveston to begin restoration work in 1978. By 1982, GHF staff and volunteers completed restoration and transformed this rare, historic vessel into a floating museum that would actively sail.
GALVESTON, Texas (April 13, 2023) When and If transits Galveston Channel during Tall Ships Challenge Galveston 2023. Galveston Causeway can be seen in the background. When and If is a yacht designed by John Alden and commissioned by then Colonel George S. Patton.
Widely regarded American war hero, U.S. Army General Patton commanded the Seventh United States Army in the Mediterranean Theater of World War II, and the Third United States Army in France and Germany after the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944. It was built in 1939 as a private yacht by boatbuilder F.F. Pendleton in Wiscasset, Maine. It was constructed of double planked mahogany over black locust frames and an oak keel.
GALVESTON, Texas (April 13, 2023) Pride of Baltimore 2, a square-topsail schooner and reconstruction of an early 19th-century Baltimore Clipper, right, and two-masted, gaff-rigged, Biloxi Oyster Schooner Glenn L. Swetman, transit Galveston Channel during Tall Ships Challenge Galveston 2023.
Pride of Baltimore 2 is Maryland’s working symbol of the great natural resources and spectacular beauty of the Chesapeake Bay region and a reminder of America’s rich maritime heritage. Pride of Baltimore II’s mission is to educate the public on Maryland’s maritime history, tradition and commerce opportunities.
Glenn L. Swetman is widely known as one of the “White Winged Queens” that once sailed the coast from the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s; however, the introduction of marine engines and the changes in oyster harvesting laws caused these beautiful crafts to disappear. Truly a museum without walls, every inch of Biloxi contains elements of its proud heritage and none greater than the majesty of the White Wings.

GALVESTON, Texas (April 13, 2023) Ernestina-Morrissey, a grand banks fishing schooner and last fishing schooner built for the Wonson Fish Company, transits Galveston channel during Tall Ships Challenge Galveston 2023. Launched as Effie M. Morrissey in 1894 in Essex, Massachusetts, this historic schooner’s first lives were as Gloucester Grand Banks fisherman, Arctic explorer, and WWII survey/supply vessel. With significant recent commitments from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and two generous private donors, and continued fundraising, Ernestina-Morrissey recently completed full restoration at Boothbay Harbor/Bristol Marine Shipyard in Maine.
GALVESTON, Texas (April 13, 2023) Nao Santa Maria, replica of the Nao Santa María of Christopher Columbus, transits Galveston Channel during Tall Ships Challenge Galveston 2023. La Santa María de la Inmaculada Concepción (Spanish for: The Holy Mary of the Immaculate Conception), or La Santa María, originally La Gallega, was the largest of the three ships used by Christopher Columbus in his first voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492.

Elissa welcomes over 40,000 visitors annually and serves as the Official Tall Ship of Texas, a National Historic Landmark and a symbol of the Gulf Coast’s historic beginnings as a seaport and active waterfront.
