Turkish human traffickers opened fire with a firearm against a vessel of the Greek Port Authority off the area of Aghios Fokas, in the southern Lesvos island, on Saturday morning. No one was injured.
According to the Port Authority/Coast Guard, the Greek authorities on the vessel located the Turkish fishing boat after it had disembarked foreigners on the beach. During the approach, one of the four traffickers on the high-speed fishing boat fired against the Port Authority vessel, which responded by shots in a safe area, after which the traffickers’ vessel departed in an easterly direction toward the Turkish coast.
The Port Authority vessel followed the fishing boat to the Turkish territorial waters and alerted their counterpart Turkish authorities, who stopped it.
In the general vicinity of the village Greek police found 25 foreigners.
A preliminary investigation is being carried out by the Port Authority of Mytilini.
