Security is a prerequisite for development. The government does not make any concessions on issues of national security and if it fails to secure European funds it will complete the fence along the entire length of the Greek-Turkish border in Evros with national funds, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said during his speech to residents of Orestiada on Friday.
“I want to express my regret for the fact that today there are political forces in Greece that oppose this project and submit an amendment and resolutions to the European Parliament so that this technical barrier, the fence, is not financed by European funds,” said the prime minister.
At the same time, he recalled the Turkish hybrid attack against Greece at the Evros border three years earlier and emphasised that the government dealt with it successfully.
The prime minister expressed his belief that ruling New Democracy will be the big winner on the evening of May 21 and this is because, as he said, “there is no alternative government proposal.”
The dilemma of the elections, he stressed, is “stability and progress or adventures.
PM promises double-track railway line by 2028 in Didymoticho
The prime minister later stopped at the border town of Didymoticho, where he said that a double-track railway line from Alexandroupolis to Ormenio, costing more than one billion euros, will have been completed by 2028 and transform the Evros region.
He said that the last four years had led to “unprecedented growth” in the Evros regional unit and that this was no accident but a result of his government’s successful policies. Referring to the great growth potential of Alexandroupolis, Mitsotakis promised balanced growth in the south and north of Evros, adding that this was the reason why he chose to stand for election in the region.
Talking about the contract to extend the Evros fence by 35 km, which is to be signed on Friday afternoon, he once again attacked main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance for its stance on this issue.
The prime minister also visited the Didymoticho military hospital and general hospital, where he spoke with doctors and staff and visited the paediatric, maternity and gynaecological clinics.
