Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday met with the President of Moldova Maia Sandu at the Maximos Mansion. “These are contacts that confirm the strong momentum of relations between Greece and Moldova. I would like to congratulate you on the successful conduct of the recent parliamentary elections in your country. It is of particular significance that the outcome of this vote sent a clear message of stability and democratic maturity,” he stated after his meeting with Sandu.
“Despite external pressures, the Moldovan people proved that they are neither intimidated nor manipulated. You guaranteed unity and provided courage and perspective. Greece will stand by your side, supporting the territorial integrity and independence of your country. At the European Council, I will reiterate that the accession of the Western Balkan states, as well as Moldova and Ukraine, constitutes a strategic priority for us. This depends primarily on the performance of each candidate country. Moldova’s progress is indisputable. I am confident that, thanks also to your determination, your country will continue to meet European criteria. It is now up to the European institutions to recognise this progress. As Greece, we are ready to support your efforts by offering expertise in the incorporation of the EU acquis,” the premier said.
Mitsotakis also noted that they discussed the opportunities arising from enlargement and economic cooperation, with an emphasis on the vertical corridor. “ Last month, extremely important agreements were signed in Athens. They pave the way for the import and distribution of American liquefied natural gas-an development that transforms Greece into an energy hub and a reliable provider of energy security throughout the region. This is the result of methodical planning and the effective use of our geographical position. Greece is playing a leading role in an alternative route that will allow Europe to disengage even more rapidly from Russian natural gas,” he stressed.
Among other points, Mitsotakis said they agreed to strengthen the economic alignment of the two countries, noting that the potential is significant. “ We know that your top priority is attracting foreign investment, and we would be pleased if, within this framework, we could be of assistance to your country,” he underlined. “ Greece sees your country as a true friend. We share a sense of common responsibility for safeguarding peace and stability in Europe,” the Prime Minister concluded.
Maia Sandu: Relationship with Greece a window of opportunity for Moldova’s European perspective
On her part, the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, described the relationship with Greece-as well as accession to the European Union-as a window of opportunity for her country’s European future and development.
The Moldovan president, whose country has been an EU candidate since 2022, also described her visit as a milestone and a confirmation that cooperation between the two countries is not only strong but consistently impressive. She spoke of the strong cultural and spiritual ties connecting the two peoples and warmly congratulated Greece “ on its impressive transformation over the past decade.”
She referred to Greece’s major economic success, which she said “ is a national achievement and a source of inspiration for Moldova and for all of Europe,” noting that “ Greece has proven that with determination, reforms, and unity, a country can overcome difficulties and emerge stronger, more resilient, and more confident about its future.” She described Greece’s assumption of the Eurogroup presidency as a reflection of the trust the country enjoys and of the-according to her-leading role it plays at the heart of Europe’s economic architecture.
She expressed the hope that “ our excellent political relations will be translated into deeper discussions on economic cooperation,” emphasizing the need to strengthen cooperation, particularly in the field of renewable energy.
She referred to the need for access to EU-backed financing packages for investments in a market with growing demands, modernizing infrastructure, and expanding connectivity across the region.
She stressed that her country needs strategic investments in energy infrastructure and praised Greece’s role as an energy hub in Southern Europe.
She expressed her support for Ukraine and said that regional energy security must be strengthened at a time when resilience to connectivity constraints is equally important.
She also expressed the view that across the continent critical infrastructure is becoming a target of sabotage and cyberattacks, stating that “ this is why support for Ukraine and the strengthening of our collective resilience remain essential for the security of the entire European continent.”
The President of Moldova described her country’s accession to the EU as “ the most important national project since independence, and a strategic necessity and a strategy for survival at a time when an aggressor continues to threaten security.”
“ It is about joining a system of shared values, rules, and solidarity,” she concluded.
