The government’s duty is to turn the very difficult memories of the tragedy of Mati in East Attica into action, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said on Tuesday, on the 6th anniversary of the fire that claimed the lives of 104 people in 2018.
Marinakis said he could not comment on the judicial aspect of the case, but the government had made the protection of human lives a non-negotiable priority, had used evacuations and the EU-wide emergency number 112 for messages to the public, and instituted “an entirely different approach for multiple fires and the multiple challenges of climate change.”
The essence, he said, is for the state to learn its lesson and “turn the lessons into action and policy.”
Every summer, the government spokesperson said, Greece improves with more firefighters, better action plans, drones, and 112.
