Rekindlings of fires kept firefighters busy on Tuesday, particularly in Mt. Parnitha north of Athens and in Evros, NE Greece.
On Tuesday firefighters dealt with 87 fires in Greece. A total of 44 broke out in the last 24 hours; most were put out at their initial stages, the Fire Brigade said in an update.
In Mt. Parnitha, a large-scale firefighting effort focused on the dispersed and small rekindlings, mostly in the southwestern flank of the forest, near the Fyli Fortress (Frourio Fylis).
In Evros prefecture, rekindlings were fought at Lefkimmi, Tris Vryses, Leptokarya and Kotronia.
The distribution of foreign assistance is as follows: Cyprus with an aircraft in Alexandroupolis and 31 firefighters in the Lykomagoula region; Germany in Fyli with 2 aircraft; France with 2 aircraft in the Alexandroupolis; the Czech Republic with a helicopter in Distomo (Boeotia) and 30 firefighters with 6 fire engines in Kotronia (Evros); Romania with 53 firefighters and 10 engines in Kirki (Alexandroupolis); Bulgaria with 36 firefighters and 5 engines in Leptokarya (Evros); Slovakia with 39 fiefighters and 8 engines in Lefkimmi (Alexandroupolis); and Serbia with 16 firefighters with 4 engines in Papikio (Komotini). In addition, Albania has contributed 46 firefighters with 5 engines in the forest of Dadia, following an interstate agreement.
Assisting the Fire Brigade are a large number of volunteer firefighters, Armed Forces members, and the Greek police, along with water trucks and large machinery from Greek regions, while the causes of fires are being investigated as well.
The threat of fire remains high in several areas of Greece on Wednesday.
