Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis held a meeting with the Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Amy Pope on Thursday, with which they signed a Host Country Agreement between Greece and ΙΟΜ. “Immigration will be a huge challenge in the future,” said Gerapetritis adding: “We are facing worldwide many challenges associated with people deprived of basic goods, with war victims who have no kind of work.”
Gerapetritis pointed out that, “it is extremely important to have a strong organization on which we can rely not only to deal with migration flows, but also to turn irregular migration routes into legal. It is also important to combat the root causes of migration and to offer people a better life so that they can stay at home.”
Pope recalled that Greece was a founding member of the Organization. “Since the early days of the IOM after World War II, Greece has played a crucial role in the issue of migration. And of course, Greece has experienced the evolution of the issue of immigration over time,” she emphasized.
