A fire that broke out earlier on Saturday at a forested area near the Monastery of the Great Lavra on Mt. Athos has been placed under partial control, the Fire Brigade said.
The fire broke out at 07:00 on Saturday, 5 kilometers north-northwest of the oldest monastery in the peninsula of the all-male monastic community.
Four airplanes and a helicopter are dumping water, while 43 firefighters with 11 fire trucks and 3 rough terrain groups are on site. Winds in the area were earlier reported to be registering 5 on the Beaufort scale.
