An F/A-18F Super Hornet, assigned to the “Black Knights” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 154, approaches the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), May 7, 2021, in support of flight operations above the Joint Pacific Alaska Range Complex and Gulf of Alaska during Exercise Northern Edge 2021 (NE21). Η πρόσφατη απόφαση της Ινδίας να επιλέξει το γαλλικό μαχητικό Rafale M, αντί του αμερικανικού F/A-18E/F για το Ναυτικό της, θα οδηγήσει το πιο πιθανό στον τερματισμό της παραγωγής του Super Hornet το 2025.
Σύμφωνα με το FlightGlobal, ένα εξαγωγικό συμβόλαιο θα έδινε την ευκαιρία στην Boeing, που κατασκευάζει το F/A-18 Super Hornet, να κρατήσει ανοικτή τη γραμμή παραγωγής του τύπου ως το 2027. Το F/A-18 Super Hornet μπήκε σε υπηρεσία με το Αμερικανικό Ναυτικό το 1999. Εκτός από το τελευταίο έχει αγοραστεί από την Αυστραλία και το Κουβέιτ. Πάντως και μετά το 2025 οι “Σούπερ Ρινόκεροι” θα συνεχίσουν να πετάνε για πολλά χρόνια ακόμη στα αμερικανικά αεροπλανοφόρα.
