Deputy Minister of National Defence Ioannis Kefalogiannis met on Tuesday with a delegation from the World Hellenic Inter-Parliamentary Association (WHIA) at the Ministry of National Defence. He was accompanied by the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff General Dimitrios Choupis.
The meeting focused on current geopolitical developments and Greek national issues of interest. Kefalogiannis expressed his appreciation for WHIA’s significant role in strengthening ties between diaspora and Greece, promoting national interests and raising international awareness on critical national issues.
The discussions included the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the violation of the Prespa Agreement by North Macedonia, the situations in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Red Sea.
Regarding Greece- Türkiye relations, Kefalogiannis noted, “Following recent high tensions in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean due to Turkish actions, rhetoric, casus belli and revisionism-including threats of violence-there is currently a calmer atmosphere on the ground.”
He also mentioned that, since the initiation of bilateral dialogue channels between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the foreign ministers have agreed on a roadmap for upcoming bilateral engagements. Kefalogiannis also stressed that this includes a political dialogue, discussions on confidence-building measures (Defence Ministries) and meetings with a positive agenda covering tourism, investment, agriculture, trade, maritime affairs, and climate change.
