Greek Foreign Affairs Minister George Gerapetritis departed for Brussels on Sunday to attend the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council on Monday.
The agenda will include Russia’s war against Ukraine and the situation on the Middle East. A ministry statement said the focus would be on developments in the Middle East.
According to the Council, its discussion “will be informed by separate informal exchanges” with Israeli Foreign Minister of Foreign Affairs Israel Katz in the morning; League of Arab States Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit and Foreign Affairs Ministers of Saudi Arabia (Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud), Egypt (Sameh Shoukry), and Jordan (Ayman Safadi) over lunch; and Palestinian National Authority FM Riyad al-Maliki in the afternoon. It added that discussion “may touch on the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, the need to prevent spill-over in the region and the way forward.”
Before the Council’s work, the EU foreign ministers will attend a breakfast with the Egyptian FM. Gerapetritis will also attend the 10th Council of EU-Egypt Association Council that will meet on Tuesday (Jan. 23).
Following the end of the Council’s meeting, Gerapetritis is expected to meet with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.
