Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with Central Macedonia Governor Apostolos Tzitzikostas at Maximos Mansion on Thursday afternoon, who has been proposed for the position of Greek Commissioner in the European Commission.
Tzitzikostas expressed his gratitude to Mitsotakis for the nomination. “With my experience in European institutions, I am well aware of the challenges currently facing the EU, and I am determined to work hard to create a Europe that meets the expectations of our citizens,” Tzitzikostas said. He also highlighted that Mitsotakis’s decision underscores the recognition of the role and potential of northern Greece and Macedonia. Tzitzikostas committed to continuing his efforts “ for the development and improvement of our citizens’ daily lives, serving Greece and the European Union with a sense of duty and responsibility.”
In his remarks, Mitsotakis praised Tzitzikostas for his distinguished decade-long career in local government, noting his high approval ratings and broader political acceptance in the second largest region of the country. “You are also someone who knows European institutions well, having served as President of the Committee of the Regions,” Mitsotakis added.
Mitsotakis emphasized that Tzitzikostas’s ability to align local and regional priorities with major European imperatives makes him well-suited for the challenging role of Greek Commissioner in Brussels. He wished Tzitzikostas success in the European Parliament’s hearing process and thanked European Commission Vice President and current Greek Commissioner Margaritis Schinas for his outstanding collaboration on critical issues, including migration-a significant and ongoing challenge for Greece.
