Migration and Asylum Minister Dimitris Kairidis met on Friday with the Ukrainian Minister of the Cabinet of Ministers Oleh Nemchinov.
The Greek minister was briefed on the situation in Ukraine and, after expressing Greece’s support for the Ukranian peoples’ struggle, he presented in detail the Greek government’s policy in terms of providing temporary protection to the Ukrainian citizens currently in Greece.
The total number of registered Ukrainians under temporary protection is 27,000 but the total number of Ukrainians in Greece is much higher. Another 4,500 Ukrainians of all ages participated in the integration programme “HELIOS” of the Migration and Asylum Ministry which provides rent subsidy, Greek language lessons, as well as vocational training and healthcare.
Kairidis announced that in the following days he will sign a ministerial decision on the extension of the temporary protection status for another year, until March 2025, according to the EU’s decision.
