Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis on Tuesday participated in the 10th EU-Egypt Association Council held in Brussels.
Addressing the meeting, which was chaired by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell and attended by European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi, Gerapetritis underlined the importance of upgrading the EU’s relations with Egypt to strategic relations.
Describing Egypt as a pillar of stability for the entire region, especially during the currently geopolitically fragile period, Gerapetritis praised Cairo’s constructive and moderate role in the Middle East crisis and in broader regional developments.
Gerapetritis last week carried out a working visit to Cairo and on Monday welcomed his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry to a working breakfast with EU foreign ministers.
