Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis held a meeting with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Al Safadi, on Wednesday. “We are coordinating actions to provide know-how and a comprehensive reconstruction plan for Palestine,” he said.
“We have no time for further delay because any expansion of hostilities will make the peace process almost impossible,” Gerapetritis emphasized and added that, apart from the humanitarian crisis, any escalation will have serious side effects, mentioning the economic consequences of restricted freedom of navigation and the impact on migration flows.
When asked about the joint proposal with Denmark and Portugal, he stated that it concerns providing technical assistance to the Palestinian Authority to strengthen democratic institutions.
He highlighted that at this critical moment for global peace and security, Greece is assuming the duties of an elected member of the UN Security Council for the biennium 2025-2026.
Referring to Greece-Jordan bilateral relations, he noted that the cultural and economic interaction between them has a history of 10,000 years. He also mentioned that bilateral relations have particular dynamics, especially in the economy, trade, defence and culture. He described the trilateral cooperation between Greece, Cyprus and Jordan as an “important chapter.” Gerapetritis also expressed Greece’s appreciation for Jordan’s protection during pilgrimages to the Holy Land.
“Any threat to stability and peace is a common threat,” the Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Al Safadi emphasized.
He underscored the special importance of trilateral cooperation between Greece, Cyprus and Jordan and mentioned that the King of Jordan is keen on strengthening this relationship.
Regarding the situation in Palestine, he highlighted that “two-thirds of society in Gaza has left and tens of thousands of people have been killed.” He noted that the only solution is the two-state solution. “This war must stop,” he stressed. “What Israel is doing is a crime that must be stopped. It is a tragedy,” Al Safadi said.
