An agreement for the creation of waterdromes in Alexandroupolis and the island of Samothrace was signed on Tuesday, Ellinika Ydatodromia (Greek Water Airports) announced.
The agreement between Greek Water Airports (GWA) and the Evros Development Company SA is part of the Region of East Macedonia and Thrace’s strategic plan to develop its regions, and follows similar agreements GWA has signed with local governments throughout Greece. The company specializes in studying, constructing, licensing and operating waterdromes, and has assumed construction of 37 in total since the relevant law was passed.
GWA has provided the licensing of the first waterdrome in Greece at Kanistro in Kassandra, on the Halkidiki peninsula, and has already completed the approvals of waterdromes in Porto Heli, Ermioni, Lavrio, Kissamo Chanion, Kea, Erikoussa, Othoni, and Mathraki.
In a statement, GWA said, “Through the waterdromes, Alexandroupolis and Samothrace will be able to offer both to permanent residents and visitors a new transportation means, modern, flexible, and safe. The flights of hydroplanes could use both any licensed water airport and land airports with the use of amphibian hydroplanes. The flexibility and speed of a hydroplane will allow tourists to reach their holiday destination easily and quickly and to go on excursions in an innovative manner, expanding their choices in accessible destinations. Of particular value is the option hydroplanes provide to carry out hospital flights, while their operational multiuse can be supplemented with flights carrying cargo, the post, small-scale firefighting, and so on.”
